(be (down) on one's back (тж. lie on one's back))
1) быть положенным на обе лопатки; быть беспомощным (тж. be flat или thrown on one's back) [этим. спорт.]

He's flat on his back after a long succession of failures. (RHD) — Бесконечные неудачи подкосили его.

I am still "on my back" awaiting a decision from Washington. (DAE) — Я ничего не могу предпринять, пока не придет решение из Вашингтона.

2) заболеть, слечь (в постель)
